BEST PRACTICES

The Concept of Best Practices is to provide a written game plan for overall Safety & Success, without requiring specific rules that "Must" be complied with. (For Compliance Rules click ...HERE...)
Instead, NCWA BEST PRACTICES provides each Wrestler, Coach, Athletic Department and Institution a road map of the best route to reach overall health of their college wrestling program. Best Practices Should be looked at as the Standard Expected of All NCWA Programs, and while non-compliance does not result in league penalties, lack of adherence to these practices could result in issues of Athlete Safety, Coach's Liability or other program challenges that could have been easily foreseen and avoided.*

OPTIONAL TEAM SCORING
The NCWA Conference Boards voted at the 2013 Vision Form to allow for an Optional Team Scoring (OTS) method that was piloted by teams during the 2013-14 season. Both Coaches must agree to any optional scoring method prior to the event. Officials, and Fans should be made aware of the "Optional" team scoring method prior to beginning the event, preferably by distribution of a one page flyer detailing the OTS
Teams cannot be required to use the OTS, but once agreed to, the results will be determined and reported based upon the OTS method.
The OTS is an Idea that we hope will make matches more exciting for fans and wrestlers. It has the potential to encourage wrestling throughout the match and we believe discourages stalling. It should be easier for fans to understand team scoring as well as providing suspense and opportunity for team comeback wins till the very last match in most cases. ...consider trying it and letting us know how it works for you.
New Dual match "Optional" Team Scoring
CONCEPT - Individual Bout Scores are directly reflected in the Team Scores
Forfeit / No show = 16 points / Loser = 0
Fall, DQ, Injury Default, = 15 points / Loser = 0
Tech Fall = 10 point spread, both wrestlers get their points

WHY EXPERIMENT WITH OR CHANGE OUR TEAM SCORING SYSTEM
This Optional scoring system (OTS) seems to encourage wrestling throughout… All wrestlers contribute to the team even in an individual loss.
1) Encourages more scoring ... Adds excitement for fans with more offense and less defense
2) Encourages working for points till the end of the bout even with lopsided score.
3) Working for the fall now matter more than ever,
4) Discourages stalling - even in a losing effort athletes score points for their team
5) Big team comebacks possible… keeps fans, and athletes involved right till the end of the dual.
6) Easy for new wrestling fans to understand and follow team score
7) Discourages forfeits , getting pinned is better than a forfeit. keeping more wrestlers on the squad
