Wrestling With Liability Issues
INSURANCE
The NCWA does not sell insurance but does currently provide all member institutions in good standing with liability coverages for coaches, and athletes while practicing on campus, traveling to and from sanctioned events and during NCWA competitions as part of their annual association membership.
The NCWA requires that All athletes competing within the association also carry personal health or injury insurance. In Addition to a Schools Liability coverages, Properly registered and cleared athletes are given $25,000 of secondary injury coverages by the NCWA. Every institution granted full membership into the NCWA are covered with 1,000,000 / 3,000,000 of Liability insurance coverages from 9/1 through 5/1 each season. These coverages, properly administered protect the school, coaches & approved volunteers.
Conditions of Individual Injury Coverage
For an athlete to be covered under the NCWA's secondary coverages they must:
1. Be shown as "Cleared for Competition" on the NCWA Compliance website - www.ncwa.net
to be cleared, the athlete must register on-line, sign and upload the NCWA waiver form and appear on their teams official roster.
2. They must be insured with primary coverages through their family, the school or themselves.
3. All claims must be reported to the NCWA within 60 days of the injury for insurance coverages to apply
Conditions of Liability and Injury Coverages
The wrestling program must be an officially recognized school activity practicing on the campus of the University.
Hosted Events - Competitive collegiate style events must have an Athletic Trainer assigned to the event and NCWA registered officials
must be used. All athletes participating in the hosted event must be affiliated with an NCWA, NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA recognized collegiate
folkstyle wrestling program. athletes participating in freestyle or greco roman competition should seek coverages with USA wrestling or
other insurers offering coverages for these styles of combatives.
Officials and Liability
All State or NCAA Certified Wrestling officials with at least 3 years of varsity mat experience are eligible for registration with the NCWA. Coaches must use NCWA "Registered Officials" for their events to be covered by both the liability and Injury coverages offered through membership in the NCWA. The NCWA rules are specific in requiring such officials. Teams that choose other officials not only open themselves up to league fines, but may forfeit coverages during the event in which such Non-Registered Officials are used. Registration for officials is Free.
Off Site Practice or Hosted Competition
NCWA Member Programs are automatically covered for Liability issues for all events hosted ON the school campus, provided the team is compliant with NCWA Rules. Practice or hosted competition at "Off Campus Venues" must be applied for through to the NCWA for these additional coverages to apply. There may be expanded membership fees required, contact the NCWA to get estimates for specific events.

Benefits:
$ 25,000 Maximum Medical Benefit per Claim
$ 2,500 Accidental Death/Dismemberment Benefit per Claim

**Excess coverage means policy is secondary to an injured party primary health insurance.
Policy will not cover primary insurance deductibles, co-pays, program limits, or out of network care.
Accident Exclusions:

Injuries paid under workers' compensation, employer's liability laws or similar occupational benefits or while engaging in activity for monetary gain from sources other than the Subscriber. Policy will not cover primary insurance deductibles, co-pays, or out of network care.
WARNING: Practicing, Traveling or Competing without properly registering Athletes, Coaches or Teams Staff Members could result in insurance claims not being honored by the insurance company. Individual schools may cover athletes, coaches and staff outside of the NCWA coverages. but to be covered under the NCWA insurances it must be understood that:
ALL INDIVIDUALS PRACTICING TRAVELING OR COMPETING MUST BE FULLY REGISTERED AND CLEARED THROUGH THE NCWA.
The NCWA does not support competition or practice with individuals not actively affiliated with our member institutions, NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA recognized athletic team nor does the NCWA endorse practice or competition within our member schools for Co-Ed competition.
